Winter Magnolias 2003

The deciduous magnolias are among my favorite flowering trees and favorite flowers to photograph. Favorite because they bloom early in the season when not much else is happening. Favorite to photograph because they have big beautiful waxy-petaled flowers that practically demand that you take their picture because they know they know they're beautiful! - Jack

2/17/03 - Saucer Magnolia Buds

Most years we would have seen some saucer magnolia (Magnolia x soulangeana) flowers by now and I'm getting impatient! Warm days have created big fat fuzzy buds but cold nights have kept them from bursting forth. I don't think they can hold off much longer so I'm expecting an explosion of pretty pink in the next day or two.

...for my saucer magnolias (M. x soulangeana) to bloom! They've been ready to go for a week but the near freezing nights are holding them back.

2/20/03 - It bloomed!

My saucer magnolias (M. x soulangeana) have at last begun to bloom which means spring is right around the corner and headed our way!

Susan Magnolia
'Susan' Magnolia
This delightful deciduous magnolia selection has solid red-purple flowers that appear just after the saucer magnolias (M. x soulangeana) bloom. Susan looks great and smells good too - what a hottie!

Magnolia stellata's gorgeous flowers are also fragrant and adorn the bare limbs in late winter before the leaves appear.

Star Magnolia 'Waterlily'
This variety of M. stellata has light pink buds and pink-blushed flowers.

Star Magnolia Abstract

Here's one of my digital renderings of a star magnolia. It was a rainy morning and a shaft of sunlight struck a pair of blossoms from behind. I loaded the image into Photoshop and what came out was this - it's a flashback to a picture I saw on a Howard Johnson's placemate when I was a kid in the late fifties.
