Roseate Spoonbill
Mark photographed this immature roseate spoonbill as he was taking a break from feeding in the shallows of the Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge to preen it's feathers. "Looks are everything" when scores of wading and shore bird species migrate to sunny Florida for the winter mating season! This pink hotie will warm up your computer desktop!

American Beautyberry
One of autumn's most colorful characters is the beautyberry (Callicarpa americana). The shiny metallic purple beautyberries are a treat to look at but not to eat - unless you're a hungry bird discovering them in midwinter! Treat yourself now and download them to jazz up your computer desktop.

Gloriosa Lily
Wonderfully weird, fantastic of form and brilliantly beautiful, the gorgeous gloriosa lily (Gloriosa superba 'Rothschildiana') is a tropical treat that I treasure in the garden and enjoy as wallpaper on my computer desktop. - Jack

Tiger Swallowtail on Garlic Chives
This beautiful butterfly, the tiger swallowtail, is dining on a pretty plant called garlic chives (Allium tuberosum). They taste good (the chives not the butterfly :-), are easy to grow and the flowers have the scent of violets. They're also pretty as a picture - wallpaper them onto your computer desktop.

Moonflower
(Ipomoea alba)
The moonflower vine is a close cousin to the morning glory and might just as well be called the evening glory. But because its huge, pure white flowers appear at day's end and virtually glow in the nighttime darkness it's easy to see how they acquired their common name. You'll enjoy a full moon arising on your computer desktop if you download this pic for wallpaper! - Jack

Yellow Ginger Lily
Dave Skinner, Floridata's expert on gingers and related species, gave me a start of this Hedychium 'Sherry Baby' two seasons ago. A couple of weeks ago it burst forth for the first time with these beautiful blushing blooms. What a knockout! Thanks Dave! - Jack

Dionaea muscipula
This flytrap is enjoying a dinner of fresh caught bug. While I'm not partial to insects, I feel kinda sorry for the little fellow! (Actually we suspect that this dinner was Mark's treat...)

Mandevilla
Mandevilla x amoena 'Alice du Pont'
Speeding past a Tallahassee motel I caught sight of an incredible curtain of brilliant pink flowers draped from a sabal palm. I returned a few days later to identify the vine as a Mandevilla hybrid called 'Alice du Pont'. All summer long Alice adorns herself with huge racemes (flower clusters) each composed of 10 to 20 flowers. What a babe! - Jack

Scrambling Sky Flower Vine
I've grown this tender tropical vine in Zone 8 for many years. Every winter it gets clobbered by freezes and every spring it pops right back. Starting in May it cranks out tons of these big blue trumpet flowers and continues until frost. It is Thunbergia battiscombei. Temperate zone gardeners can grow it in containers where it is quit comfortable. The scramblin' sky flower vine is extremely easy and beneficently (I got a new thesaurus) beautiful and I recommend it - try some if you see it offered. - Jack

Southern Magnolia
(Magnolia grandiflora)
Mark photographed this exquisite magnolia blossom as it posed just a few feet about the ground. This particular tree thrives within a hundred yards of the salty Apalachee Bay here in North Florida. These versatile beauties can survive and thrive in sand and swamp, wetland and woodland, and even in hostile parking lot and urban plantings! Invite the southern magnolia into your garden so it can astound you with its evergreen beauty and charm. - Jack

click to download the luffa vine

Luffa Gourd Vine
I fertilized this luffa (Luffa aegyptiaca) gourd vine with some of my famous dog compost and now it is dominating the fenceline. The luffa is known as "vegetable sponge" and is often overpriced at health food stores. Fueled by all that dog poop, my luffa vines should produce many gourd sponges by October. If they do, I will take pictures of them and write a luffa Profile for our Plant Encyclopedia (note 10/22/01: they did and Steve did the luffa profile). I will also use this ample and inexpensive supply of mildly abrasive vegetable fiber bathing accessory to provide supple, vibrant, touchability to my skin which will radiate a healthy inner glow. - Jack

And here is the poem that I made to go with the picture:

The lively luffa leaps the fence in quick accelerations,
While tossing twirling tendrils in drunken celebration.

First Day of Summer
It was late afternoon on the first day of summer when I noticed the catfish pond at Floridune take on magical glow. Such a stunningly singular sight to see the setting sun spark a superbly scintillating summer solstice scene. (yes, i'm an alliterate idiot who just wasted 15 minutes writing that but the picture is pretty you should download it to wallpaper your desktop) - Jack

click to download John's ducks

Jack's Duck Boys
These two mallards are the last of two dozen ducklings that I raised several years ago. Some were eaten by varmints, and some joined flocks of wild ducks and flew off. Although they make the summertime duck circuit to points north in the summer, these guys have reliably returned to Floridune for the past several years. This handsome pair is collectively known as the Duck Boys and they excel at mooching/stealing cracked corn from the neighbors. They are seen here relaxing among the bald cypress, tupelo and yaupon holly of a flooded sinkhole called the Cypress Pond. Update 12/10/02: unfortunately Duck Boy #1 disappeared in February 2002 leaving his buddy visibly lonely and depressed until May 2002 when #2 also went missing. Both are believed to have been eaten by a hungry hawk family that moved in that spring. RIP Duck Boys.

Great egret

Great Egret
Here is a gorgeous shot from Mark Harris of the beautiful great egret (formerly called the American egret). This individual is sporting its mating plumage - in the early half of the last century the egret's plumes were coveted decorations for ladies' hats. The species was almost wiped out in Florida to supply the demand. It is now threatened, by among other things, loss of habitat.
