Scrub plum occurs
in scrub and turkey oak sandhills in Lake, Orange,
Osceola, Polk and Highlands Counties. This is a small
plum, usually no more than 4' tall, with thorny, zigzag
branches and twigs. Scrub plum's pinkish white flowers
appear in February and March. The fruits, which ripen in
April and May, are sweet and juicy but remain green. You
can see scrub plum at Bok Tower Gardens, Babson Park
Nature Center, Lake Arbuckle State Park and State Forest,
and many of The Nature Conservancy's scrub preserves in
Polk and Highlands Counties. This Endangered Species is available from
some native plant nurseries. It does well in cultivation,
requiring light, sandy soil and full sun.
