Animals of The Florida Scrub

silver-backed argiope
Argiope floridana

The silver-backed argiope is a common and conspicuous orb-weaver in central Florida scrubs and other open, dry habitats. They seem to go through population cycles, being much more abundant some years than others. Silver-backs feed largely on grasshoppers and moths which they catch in 2-3' orb-webs erected within low shrubs. They locate prey that's been caught in the web by feeling the vibrations, then rush to it and wrap it tightly in silk before retreating to a corner to dine. Silver-backs are inoffensive and harmless to people.
