Deadheading Deadheading is the removal of spent flowers soon after they have bloomed. If the flowers are allowed to remain, the plant will develop fruits and seeds, using energy that could otherwise go to producing more flowers, foliage or roots. Deadheading herbaceous annuals and perennials usually results in more blooms that season. Deadheading woody plants will not increase the number of flowers produced that season, but it will reallocate energy to growth and to the production of next season's flower buds.
