Vines climb with the aid of tendrils or root hairs or twining stems, or just sprawl across the ground. Some live for centuries and reach gigantic proportions and some are annuals less than 10 in (25 cm) long. In the home landscape, vines trained on arbors or trellises are ideal for shading patios and other outdoor living areas. Some vines are used as ground covers where mowing is not practical, or as living accents on trees.
