List # 964 - Julie's Landscape Plants

My sister Julie recently removed damaged flowering pear and maple trees from the front yard of her home in Northern Kentucky last winter (2010). This spring I helped her make new plantings for the front of the house. To help her remember what and where we planted I made a FloriDazL List of the plants we used with links to the respective Plant Profiles in Floridata's Plant Encyclopedia. I expect that making customer plant care guide like this will be a popular use of our FloriDazL system by our members once it launches. I used a drawing program to write the names of the plants seen in some of the work site photos. The number that precedes some of the names are that plant's Floridata Identification number ("FDID") which indicates an entry in the Floridata Plant Encyclopedia.

Two large damaged trees were removed earlier in the year. In June we made a new planting for the front entry and added a few new shrubs and trees.

We planted 5 'Blue Rug' junipers (also known as 'Wiltonii') to serve as a very low growing evergreen groundcover.

6720 - 'Everlasting Summer' Hydrangeas

We planted three of these blue-flowered beauties right near the front door. Hydrangeas bloom in the spring and early summer but this cultivar will bloom throughout the season on into fall.

6721 - Geraniums in Containers

Julie overwintered a half dozen containers of geranium in her garage. I repotted them all in fresh, moisture retentive commercial soil mix.

6722 - 'Encore' Azaleas at Julie's

We planted three 'Encore' azaleas beneath the bay window. They bloom in the spring and sporadically throughout the summer and fall. Keep trimmed to about 3 feet high so they don't block the window.

6724 - Madagascar periwinkle

We planted a dozen bright red Madagascar periwinkles near the front of the bed behind the 'Blue Rug' juniper. This is a tropical perennial that is grown as an annual in cold winter climates like Kentucky.

6725 - 'Royal Purple' Smoketree

We planted one smoketree bush in front of the bay window. It can be trimmed to keep it from blocking the view. Smoketree typically grows to about 10 feet. Young spring leaves are bright purple, in fall they change to bright orange.

This popular little tree grows slowly. Doesn't need trimming.

6728 - Big Variegated Periwinkle Vine

Several existing large clumps of variegated periwinkle were trimmed or moved to the edges of the new planting by the front door. They make a nice seasonal groundcover and contrast nicely with adjacent small periwinkle vines.

A picture of Julie's wintercreeper from 10 years ago is in the Floridata profile for this plant. In that time it has grown more than 3 feet away from the house, the porch light is hidden in a tunnel of foliage so it needs to be cut back so as to not look goofy...

6732 - 'Diablo' Ninebark Tree

The 'Diablo' ninebark is a small tree with attractive spring flowers, dark red foliage and interesting white bark. Julie is lucky to have one of these beauties - I'm looking forward to seeing how it performs.

6733 - 'Sioux' Crepemyrtle

I was surprised at how many crepemyrtle varieties are available to gardeners "up north". Julie lived in Mississippi for several years and missed the crepe's annual summertime flowershow. Now she has a beautiful pink flowered 'Sioux' crepemyrtle to enjoy in Kentucky.

6735 - 'Forest Pansy' Eastern Redbud Tree

Julie had a dogwood tree outside of her kitchen window. It died this year and a replacement was needed. After some shopping a 'Forest Pansy' redbud tree was selected for its early spring flowers, colorful summertime bronze foliage that turns even more colorful in the autumn.

6737 - Eastern Hemlock Tree

There are several hemlock trees around the house that are looking scruffy after suffering the effects of a severe drought in 2010. Some fertilizer and regular watering will have them looking lush and lovely in no time.
