The Victory Garden: The Essential Companion This book is three complete volumes in one:
The New Victory Garden is the companion book for PBS Television's award-winning program, The Victory Garden. In 305 pages Bob Thomson, host of the series, tells and shows us how to construct raised beds, compost bins, cold frames and other garden structures. We learn how to plan a vegetable garden, use mulches, start seeds, and grow and harvest garden vegetables in a year-long month-by-month diary format. This is a how-to book by one of the world's foremost garden experts, but it's so well written and so enjoyable, you'll want to read it through, not just keep it on the shelf for reference. It will give you many ideas! Masters of the Victory Garden (my favorite of the three) contains a chapter about each of 11 gardeners who have become masters of particular garden specialties. Each (actually five are couples) was a subject for a Victory Garden television program and each was interviewed again for this book. Their specialty gardens are: rhododendrons; hostas; daylilies; roses; antique fruit trees; herbs and herbal art; dwarf conifers; peonies; wildflowers; lilies; and peppers. The enthusiasm of these experts is inspiring as we learn about their techniques for success and see the beautiful results in lavish color photographs. The Victory Garden Landscape Guide distils the art and science of landscaping into 340 colorful and informative pages. This book is the successor to Crockett's Victory Garden and Crockett's Flower Garden. It begins with a chapter on landscaping essentials, elements of design and principles of composition. Landscape planning, orientation, and structures are detailed in a practical style that makes landscaping accessible to all. Part two of the book is over 200 pages of landscaping ideas and methods. Some of the 61 chapters are: planting for birds and wildlife; using stone and gravel; trees and shrubs requiring minimum care; native plants; the wild garden; lawns and lawn grasses; the fragrant garden; ground covers and vines; decks and trellises; shade trees; water in the landscape; plants for small spaces; the fruiting garden; broad-leaved evergreens; hedges; and terraces and patios. Part three is an encyclopedia of descriptions (including size, hardiness, origin, use in the landscape, and cultural requirements) for every plant mentioned in parts one and two. With over 1000 color photographs and drawings, The Victory Garden: the Essential Companion is a handsome and practical gift for the gardener on your shopping list. Steve Christman 5/26/00
