A Modern Herbal

Mrs. M. Grieve, edited and introduced by Mrs. C.F. Leyel

The full title of this authoritative encyclopedia is: A Modern Herbal: The Medicinal, Culinary, Cosmetic and Economic Properties, Cultivation and Folklore of Herbs, Grasses, Fungi, Shrubs and Trees With all Their Modern Scientific Uses. First published in 1931 and revised in 1973, A Modern Herbal is THE bible for herbalists and anyone who wants to know about herbs, and the uses of herbs. Hilda Leyel edited, updated and confirmed the original text for the 1973 update. The emphasis is on British and North American herbs, but herbs from other parts of the world are covered as well if they are used in the West. A Modern Herbal describes more than 1000 plants that are used as herbs. There are descriptions, recipes, cultivation tips, ancient and modern uses, active constituents, medicinal actions, as well as fascinating tidbits, anecdotes and quotes from earlier herbals. The print is small and the entries are alphabetical by common (English) name. There are 200 classical botanical drawings accompanying the text. A must-have reference book, A Modern Herbal is also a delightful book to just browse.
