America's Garden Book

Louise and James Bush-Brown, revised edition edited by Howard S. Irwin with the assistance of the Brooklyn Botanic Garden

This is the fourth edition of America's Garden Book, first published in 1939. Dr. Irwin and the experts at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden have added more than 1000 new color photographs, several new chapters on environment-specific gardening, and updated the text to include new horticultural methods and new plant varieties. America's Garden Book is still geared for the North American backyard do-it-yourself gardener.

The 40 chapters in this 9 x 12" classic are organized into 6 sections: Garden Design includes chapters on garden designing and planning, and garden structures and construction; Plant Selection and Culture includes chapters on lawns, ground covers, perennials, shrubs, trees, bulbs, annuals, roses, etc.; Special Habitats includes chapters on specific garden types such as woodland, meadow, seaside, rock, wildlife, container, etc; Flavor and Fragrance includes chapters on vegetable, fruit and herb gardens; Cultural Methods and Practices has chapters on soils and soil improvement, weed control, mulches, propagation, pests and diseases, coldframes, tools, etc.; and The Indoor Garden has chapters on houseplants, greenhouse gardening and gardening under artificial light. Especially useful are the tables of garden plant characteristics and the Cultivars of Merit recommendations for every kind of garden plant.
